At Challengers, we believe that every child has the right to play.

Founded in 1979, Challengers is a charity that provides truly inclusive opportunities for disabled children and young people. Our vision is simple but powerful: a world where all children and young people can play together freely.

Play is essential for all children’s development, yet disabled children often face significant barriers to accessing it – from inaccessible facilities to a lack of support. Challengers removes these barriers by offering a safe, welcoming, and supportive environment. Our ambition is to grow to provide 100,000 hours of support to 1,000 families.

We are proud to operate a non-exclusion policy, meaning no child is turned away, regardless of the complexity of their needs. In addition to supporting young people, our services provide crucial respite for families, many of whom experience isolation and immense pressure as full-time carers.

The Role of Trustee

As a Trustee, you’ll play a vital role in the strategic leadership and governance of Challengers, helping shape our future and ensure we deliver the highest impact possible. You’ll work alongside a passionate and supportive Board and Senior Leadership Team.

Fundraising Trustee – JD

Key Responsibilities

• Uphold and support the mission, values, and strategic aims of Challengers.
• Contribute actively to Board discussions and decision-making with independent judgment and strategic insight.
• Support and challenge the Chief Executive and leadership team to deliver the charity’s objectives effectively.
• Champion the work of Challengers externally by attending events and acting as an ambassador.
• Ensure legal, financial, and regulatory compliance as outlined in the Charity Commission’s guidance for trustees.
• Engage with and support the implementation of projects and initiatives.

Prospective trustees must be over 18, DBS checked or be prepared to undergo a DBS check, and not disqualified from acting as a trustee or company director

Time Commitment

• Attendance 4 early evening Board Meetings per annum (face to face)
• Participation in the Fundraising sub-committee, which involves 4 meetings per annum (combination of virtual and face to face)
• Attend the Annual General Meeting usually in early December
• Attend and help at a minimum of one event per annum

Who are we looking for?

We are looking for individuals who are:

• Hugely supportive and believe in inclusion, play and making a difference to the lives of disabled young people
• Strategic thinkers who can bring new ideas and perspectives
• Willingness to act as ambassadors for the charity
• Team players with good communication and collaboration skills who also have independent judgement

We are particularly interested in candidates with skills and experience in:

• Significant fundraising experience at a strategic level.
• Expertise in one or more of the following: corporate partnerships, trusts and foundations, major donors, individual giving, legacy fundraising or philanthropy.
• Experience developing and delivering fundraising strategies that support long-term organisational sustainability.
• Strong commercial awareness and the ability to identify opportunities for income growth.
• A commitment to good governance and the values of Challenger

The Trustee is a voluntary, unpaid, non-executive appointment, but reasonable travel and other expenses may be reimbursed.
