“It’s Just Play, Right?” – Why Play Matters More Than You Think

Blog by CEO Gen Dearman

Someone asked me this week:
“Why play? Kids naturally know how to play, so why are you always banging on about it at Challengers?”

You can probably imagine my face.

It’s a question I’ve heard before, and one that always gets me climbing onto my metaphorical high horse—maybe even pulling out a soapbox for good measure. Because the truth is, there’s no such thing as “just” play. And here’s what I said:

Play is a lifeline.
Children with learning difficulties are 4.5 times more likely to face mental health challenges. At Challengers, 86% of parents say their child’s mental health has improved through play. Let that sink in: nearly nine in ten. Not through therapy. Not through medication. Through play.

Play fights isolation.
70% of disabled young people experience chronic loneliness. Many of the families we work with are excluded from traditional settings—be it schools, clubs, or community spaces. In fact, children with additional needs are five times more likely to be excluded from school.

This isn’t just about play—it’s about belonging. It’s about joy. It’s about giving children the space to be exactly who they are, without pressure or judgment.

And I couldn’t be more proud of our team at Challengers for building spaces where every child can experience the wonder and freedom of play.

As you head into the weekend, I hope you’ll carry this with you. Bring a little more playfulness into your day. Choose joy. Choose connection. Because play really does change lives.
