Simplyhealth shows its generosity once again to Challengers

Andover Youthscheme

Challengers is over the moon to have once again been awarded a generous donation from Simplyhealth. Challengers supports disabled children and young people across Surrey, Hampshire and beyond and this donation will go towards their scheme in Andover.

Challengers Andover supports disabled children and young people aged 13-18 with lots of exciting play and leisure opportunities. Young people have the chance to take part in activities such as messy art days, samba drumming workshops and archery as well as go on trips out to places like Harry Potter World, the seaside and Beaulieu Motor Museum. The scheme runs every Saturday and during the school holidays – all high pressure times when families need support most.

Due to recent changes to funding in Hampshire, the Andover scheme faced closure, but thanks to Simplyhealth’s overwhelmingly generous donation of £32,715 the scheme will stay open until March 2018, after which time the charity will apply to Hampshire County Council (HCC) for funding that will contribute towards continuing the scheme. The scheme has been described as a lifeline by many families as there is no other service provider like Challengers in the area and the schemes closure would have meant dozens of disabled children would have had nowhere else to go.

One parent describes how much the scheme means to her and her family: “When Challengers came to Andover it was a total revelation. They have interesting activities that are suitable for disabled children to attend, the staff are extremely well trained and nothing is too much trouble. Charlie absolutely loves his Saturdays and holiday dates and talks about Challengers and all the staff and the children that attend. He can socialise in a safe environment and we feel happy to leave him in their good care…it has meant such a difference to all our lives.”

This is the third time Challengers has been lucky enough to have been supported by Simplyhealth and the charity remains extremely grateful for their generous support. Susie Jewell, Corporate Partnerships Manager at Challengers says: ‘We are overwhelmed at Simplyhealth’s continued generosity and can’t thank them enough for all they have done for our Andover scheme. Families in the area are over the moon that the scheme is remaining open and it will make a huge difference for all the young people that go there.’

Roger Cotton, Simplyhealth’s Head of Corporate Giving says: “Disabled children are no different from any other child; they need a safe environment in which they can learn through play and the development of relationships with their peers. Their families often need that much needed ‘break’ from the 24/7 commitment, especially where there are siblings who can take ‘second place’ due to that commitment. We’re delighted to have been able to secure the survival of the Challengers Andover programme.”
