Fundraising Heroes of the Month: January 2020
This month, we’re highlighting some inspiring fundraisers who have gone the extra mile to support Challengers.
Taking on a challenge – Rob & Rich’s Ultra-Marathon
Rob, a Challengers parent, and his friend Richard took on a 100 mile ultra-marathon to raise funds for Challengers last year. This unbelievable challenge required hours of grueling training in freezing temperatures, early starts and a lot of dedication. In October 2019, they completed the ultra-marathon in less than 24 hours!
Rob’s eldest son, Harry, regularly attends Challengers in Farnham. He is a loving and happy young boy, born with a rare genetic disease called ADNP syndrome. Life can sometimes be really challenging for Rob and his family – they needed somewhere that Harry can go and have fun, while the rest of the family get some respite.
Rob said: “It is difficult to put into words but Challengers’ support has been incredible for us and they are a huge part of the drive behind me taking on a challenge as difficult as this.”
Rob and Richard began their journey with a goal of £20,000. Through corporate fundraising, a raffle and a lot of support – they managed to reach a staggering £52,000. We can’t thank Rob and Richard enough for raising this incredible amount!
#TeamOrange – Youthworker Ariella
Our very own Youthworker, Ariella is dying her hair bright orange in aid of Challengers!
She said: “Days at Challengers give children and young people the opportunity to socialise, get creative and do things they may not have the opportunity to do otherwise.
“I cannot begin to describe how amazing it is to see these children laugh and have fun – life has dealt them a difficult hand, yet they are some of the kindest, most incredible people I’ve ever met.
“The colour orange brings joy to so many children and young people…I am going to dye my hair bright orange to try and raise money and awareness of this incredible charity.”
Thank you for your incredible fundraising efforts – we look forward to seeing the end result!
Individual support – Gail Bedding
We would also like to celebrate the contribution of Trustee Gail Bedding. Gail wrote to her friends and family ahead of Christmas to suggest donations to Challengers in lieu of Christmas gifts.
She inspired one friend to set up a regular gift: ” I know how much Challengers means to my oldest friend Gail and her son Fergus. You are a wonderful charity that offers much needed help and support to families.”
Thank you Gail!
Company support – Tanium
One of our fantastic former play workers, Georgia Harwood, has been on a work placement at IT company, Tanium. Last month, she organised for her colleagues to donate Christmas presents to Basingstoke Playscheme.
The scheme got a ‘giving tree’ that the children could hang their present requests on. Each member of staff at Tanium then went away to purchase one of these gifts and they generously bought additional presents for scheme use too!
The children were delighted to receive the presents on the last day of scheme before Christmas, as well as a very special visit from Santa himself.
We are really grateful for the support of the whole team, and to Georgia for organising and nominating Challengers to receive the wonderful gifts!
Thank you all!
