Fundraiser Tale: Scarlett's Basingstoke Canal walk image

Scarlett Cluness, who is our Molesey Youth Leader, is walking the Basingstoke Canal (which is 31 miles long) with her mum in aid of Challengers. In this Fundraiser Tale, she talks about the support Challengers has given to her brother Finlay, her time on scheme, and how she has prepared for the big walk!

My mum and I are walking the Basingstoke Canal to say thank you to Challengers for all of the amazing opportunities they have provided for my brother over the past 9 years.

Sadly his time at Challengers is now up as he is 25. Challengers have gone above and beyond with everything they have done for Finlay, providing him with activities and the freedom no other service provider would have been able to give him. Challengers has also been that much needed respite my family has needed the past 9 years.

I have also worked for Challengers for 6 years now, starting as a Play Worker at Farnham Play and progressing to Leader at Molesey Youth. It has been such a privilege for me to be able to see all the hard work that goes on behind the scenes for children and young people to have such an amazing time when at scheme.

Preparing for the Basingstoke Canal walk

Before this challenge I HATED walking. I would drive 2 minutes to go food shopping to avoid the dreaded walk. The amount of pointless money I must have spent on petrol probably would have totalled our target! Now after doing lots of training I am walking everywhere, and I mean EVERYWHERE! Even to do food shopping!

At times I have not wanted to train because I’ve had a million and one things to do but just getting out walking has been great and I have spent many many hours with my mum now, and we haven’t run out of things to talk about… yet!

The thing I’m looking forward to most about this walk is the much needed bath at the end! That aside, I think it will be achieving something I never thought I would be able to achieve. When my mum first mentioned doing this I thought she was mad, but now it’s around the corner I am so excited to see Finlay at the finish line and knowing this will have all been for him.
