Fundraiser Tales: Helen Lewis and The Fab Four

In this Fundraiser Tale, Helen Lewis (pictured on the far left above) talks about the formation of ‘The Fab Four’ and why they decided to take on the Windsor 5k Colour Obstacle Course earlier this year in aid of Challengers.

We did it! We completed the Windsor 5k Colour Obstacle Course in the boiling sun and raised an amazing £740 for Challengers which far exceeded any of our expectations.

Since losing my sister under very tragic circumstances last year, things have been tough. I felt I needed to do something positive in memory of my sister whilst also helping to make a difference to others. I am very lucky to have such amazing and supportive family and friends and some of those friends decided to join me for a challenge and form ‘The Fab Four’!

We had all completed 5k running courses before but then we found out about the Windsor 5k Colour Obstacle Rush and thought it looked like a slightly different and fun challenge. We chose to run for Challengers as both my sister and some of her close friends have used the fabulous facilities and services that Challengers offer and it has made a great difference to their children’s lives over the years. We saw it as a fitting tribute to be able to give something back and to raise awareness to those who may not have heard about what Challengers do.

We prepared for the big day by completing several runs each week and we went in search of some bright running outfits in Challengers colours to wear for the event so that we would stand out from the crowd!

The big day arrived and we were full of excitement, as well as some apprehension in terms of whether we would make it over the obstacles! It was a really hot, sunny day but we powered through and were cheered on by my parents who came to watch us in action and a couple of volunteers who congratulated us on our fundraising efforts.

I think the highlight was us jumping off the last obstacle together and feeling proud that we had completed the course as a team. The event was so much fun and very in keeping with my sister’s upbeat personality. We laughed a lot and raised a lot of money and we all felt very positive about our achievements.

Thanks to Challengers for your ongoing support, to my parents for coming along on the day and to my amazing friends, Kelly, Clare and Donna for joining me in our team effort as The Fab Four! Thank you also to all of our wonderful friends and family who supported our event and sponsored us.

We definitely want to make this an annual event to continue our support for Challengers and perhaps with bigger obstacles or a longer course next time to keep ourselves challenged. Watch this space…
