Challengers Chat: Third Sector Award Nomination

Challengers Chat: September 2018

For this month’s Challengers Chat, we hand it over to our Head of Fundraising, Duncan Wilbur. He talks about Challengers being nominated for the prestigious Third Sector Award.

#TeamOrange has been shortlisted for the Third Sector Awards – Fundraising Team of the Year!

It is an incredible achievement to have made it this far. We were up against national charities with million-pound expenditure budgets and massive teams of people. On the face of it we were well and truly the underdog in orange!

Making it to the shortlist of five charities is an amazing achievement for the Fundraising and Communication Teams, everyone who wears orange and across our brilliant community of supporters, volunteers and friends. Nothing brought this sense of community into greater focus than the response to the fire which devastated the play floor at the Challengers Playcentre in Guildford in September 2017. The award is in part for the amazing response of #TeamOrange, and the hard work of so many of us to make sure we were able to bounce back from this dark time.

When you think of the community that surrounds and loves Challengers, to describe ourselves as underdogs doesn’t do us justice. Our strength is that we aren’t a fundraising team divorced from its community, relying solely upon smart advertising and brand recognition to bring the cause they represent to life. #TeamOrange is a collective of people from all walks of life who care passionately about Challengers and want to make sure that we are here for many years to come.

Whether we end up winning the award in late September doesn’t really matter – to be shortlisted is validation that we are doing something right and recognition that Challengers can’t do it alone. As government funding comes under ever increased pressure, we need to continue to grow our community and do all we can to make sure that Challengers is able to continue to challenge barriers to play.

If you helped place a collection tin, made a donation, took part in an event or simply talked about Challengers to friends and families – THANK YOU – you are #TeamOrange, and you are the best!

The Third Sector Awards take place on Thursday 20th September.
