Challengers Chat: October 2017

For this month’s Challengers Chat blog, Louise Moffat from the Community Fundraising Team talks all things fundraising volunteering!

Hello! My name is Louise and I work in the Community Fundraising Team here at Challengers. We are really lucky in the Community team to get out and about meeting our wonderful supporters and attending all sort of community events, but in order to make these events a success we need you!

Volunteers are the lifeblood of fundraising, we simply couldn’t do it without you guys. There’s only three of us Community Fundraisers but our wonderful volunteers enable us to reach far and wide, raising both money and awareness for Challengers across the region.

Where and when do we need you?

Volunteering at fundraising events is a great way to be a part of something without having to commit to a regular time or date. Whether you are holding an orange bucket at a street collection or getting stuck in on scheme, there’s loads of options when it comes to volunteering with the Community Fundraising team. A huge amount of our income comes from fundraising events and activities, not to mention the vital exposure we get from being out in local communities in our bright orange t-shirts.

Without people donating their time to help Challengers such events simply wouldn’t be profitable and we would lose a substantial and reliable source of our income. Our events range from Christmas fairs and collections to marshaling our cross country runs and cycles, with flexible times and a range of locations there’s something for everyone to get involved in.

What volunteers gain from the experience

Volunteering, even just a few hours, gives you a fantastic and well deserved feeling of fulfilment by knowing you are helping make a difference in people lives. You can also expect to have a lot of fun along the way and meet all kinds of new people and friends who all share a common interest – Challengers! Volunteering for a cause together can bring about a great sense of community.

Along with all this fun and games you can develop many useful skills; teamwork, time management, professionalism, leadership, organisation and problem-solving are just a few. Most of all volunteering gives you a great chance to try something new and build confidence in yourself and your abilities. All these skills make volunteering a great CV booster as well, and you never know when that friend you made when you were helping with car parking in a field at the Cheese and Chilli festival might become a vital contact.

Opportunities we’ve got coming up for volunteers for the rest of 2017

If you have been inspired to lend a voluntary hand then we love welcoming new faces into our Challengers family and hey, orange looks good on everyone right?! Below are all these exciting events, so if you can spare just a couple hours in the coming months what are you waiting for?

  • Guildford Fireworks Night Collection (4th November) – the Guildford Lions have chosen Challengers as their charity for the Guildford fireworks night at Stoke Park so we’re looking for some bucket holders to represent Challengers while celebrating the 5th November.
  • Combined Charities Christmas Fair (19th November) – come along to the Guildhall in Guildford to browse for lovely handmade, bespoke Christmas pressies and spend a couple of hours manning the Challengers tombola and stall.
  • Farnham Christmas Street Collection (9th December) – what better way to get in the Christmas spirit than giving away yummy mince pies while listening to the fantastic Rock Choir bust out some Christmas classics in the very festive Lion and Lamb Yard.
  • Guildford Christmas Street Collection (23rd December) – it’s Christmas Eve Eve, the mince pies are back and we’re catching those last minute Christmas shoppers at the Guildford Friary Centre with all the Christmas cheer we’ve got.

You don’t need to have any volunteering experience to become a Challengers volunteer today, you only need a big smile!
