Fun, inclusive & family. These are the three words Farnham Pre-School Manager, Jane Sutherland, uses to describe Pre-School.

Hello! My name is Jane Sutherland and I am the manager at the Farnham Pre-School at Challengers. My role covers doing SENCO work for some of our disabled children, planning activities, organising staff and just making it a really fun place to be.

I started at Challengers doing 10 days work experience for my degree. It was only supposed to be 10 days…and it’s been 8 and a half years. I started at the Playscheme, moved up to the Youthscheme and then once I graduated I moved onto a full-time role at the Pre-School. Since then I have been able to move up to my current role as Pre-School Manager.

A typical day at Pre-School sees children arriving at 9am and are welcomed by myself or my Deputy – there is always a big welcome. We start off the day with small group work where we have songs, activities and maths games, for some nice group time. We have snack time and sometimes have cooking activities to prepare our own snacks. We have ‘free-flow’ from inside to outside so children can pick what they would like to do and quite often we have big messy activities out – the messier the better! I just love getting messy – shaving foam, paint, glitter, anything to really engage the senses.

I love working at Farnham Pre-School. I’d say my favourite time working with the kids at Pre-School was a group of children in the role play area doing gastro feeds on each other and they just thought it was every day and nothing unusual, because we happen to have to children that are gastro-fed and they just joined in all together. It was a lovely moment that they just don’t see someone being tube-fed as anything unusual.

It’s the most rewarding job ever. The smiles you see on children’s faces and the progress that they make from when they start at 2 years old, it’s amazing – it’s just a big family to me, I love my Challengers family.

I would love parents to come and have a look, come and see what we do. Come to have a chat and see the activities and experience for yourself the family feel on the floor with the children – it’s just a lovely place to be.

We are having an open day on Wednesday 28th February for families and local professionals to come along and see the Pre-School in action, meet me and the rest of the staff team so if you would like to come along, please RSVP to: communications@disability-challengers.org or give me a call on 01483 230571.
