Challengers Chat: April 2018

For this edition of the Challengers Chat, find out more about the 2018 Challengers London Marathon Team (#TeamOrange) from our Community Fundraising Officer, Katie Ledger.

This year we have a fantastic team of ten Golden Bond runners who will be taking to the streets of London on Sunday 22nd April running 26.2 miles in their orange running vests to raise money for Challengers. We are so proud of our 2018 Team Orange: Sara, Helen, Daren, Heidi, Rory, Lauren, Paul, Craig, Luise, and our very own co-founder Colin who is flying over from Australia in time for the big day. Our team is hugely dynamic – for some London will be their first marathon, whilst for others it will be ticking off their 53rd! Each runner has a completely different #reasontorun and we can’t wait for the big day next month.

Team Orange fundraising

Fundraising is going AMAZINGLY well. We are so proud of each of our runners who have been busy planning different fundraising activities to reach their targets. Each runner has their own personal fundraising page and the grand total continues to grow each day on our Team Orange Campaign. The team have raised an incredible £20,000 so far, with no signs of slowing down anytime soon!

What our fundraisers have been up to

One of my favourite fundraising activities that our marathon runners have been organising is lots of cake sales and coffee mornings. Who can resist a sweet treat? Other fundraising activities have included office sweepstakes, fish and chip nights, quiz nights, Easter fun days, hosting collection tins, running street collections and much more.

The Pasta Party

This year we held our official Pasta Party at our Guildford Playcentre, where our amazing friends Andy and Haley at Riverford Organic Farmers kindly donated and prepared all the food for the night, which included a penne carbonara, vegetable pasta, salad, delicious tomato and olive focaccia bread and not forgetting healthy fruit salad for dessert.

The Pasta Party is a wonderful evening, which gives the runners the opportunity to visit our centre if they haven’t before, meet one another, and hear from Alison, one of our wonderful Parent Ambassadors about the importance of their fundraising and receive their official personalised running vest. Check out some photos from the event in our gallery!

The big day is fast approaching!

We drive our wonderful team of runners up on the big day in our Challengers minibus. As we eventually arrive in London, the chitter-chatter begins to quiet down and the nerves of the runners kick in. After a smiley team photo we wish our runners good luck as they head over to the starting point. Meanwhile our team of orange cheerers make their way to mile 21 in Limehouse, and after blowing up endless amount of balloons we are there ready and waiting for Team Orange to arrive.

My favourite part of the day is seeing each of our runners head towards our extremely loud, proud and orange station screaming their name as they make their way to us. Once they have had time to smile for the camera, and enjoy a Jelly Baby or two, it’s off to the finish line to receive those well-deserved medals!

I thought I’d end this blog with a quote from one our runners, Lauren:

“Running the London Marathon is the dream I never realised I had! Being given the opportunity to run it for Challengers has given my hobby of running so much more purpose and I am enjoying every single moment of it. A sprained ankle set me back for a few weeks, but otherwise I have been so fortunate with my training and feel very prepared for the big day. Fundraising for Challengers has been a wonderful journey. I have had such an overwhelming response of generosity, giving every single mile so much more meaning. I am so proud to be running the London Marathon whilst sharing the wonderful work of Challengers and I cannot wait to get to the start line!”

We can’t wait to cheer for our team on the 22nd April – it’s going to be a fantastic day!
