Challengers appoints new Chief Executive

David McAuley CEO

We are delighted to announce that following a rigorous recruitment process, David McAuley has been appointed as the new Chief Executive of Challengers.

David comes to Challengers with an impressive track record and a breadth of experience across a range of sectors, including national and regional charities. He takes over the reins from Laura Sercombe, who is moving on to pastures new after 8 years at Challengers.

Born and raised in Northern Ireland, David started his career with the British Forces Broadcasting Service before going on to gain qualifications which led him to a career change supporting companies within the small business sector.

In 2008 David joined The Trussell Trust as Operations Director and subsequently as Chief Executive, growing the charity into the UK’s largest award-winning foodbank and anti-poverty charity. Following his 9-year tenure at Trussell, David became Chief Executive of OPENhouse Stroud, a charity that provides supported housing and life skills to young adults in crisis.

Speaking on his appointment, David said: “I am extremely pleased to be joining Challengers at an exciting time for the charity as it celebrates its 40th birthday and continues to provide truly inclusive play and leisure for disabled children and young people. I am looking forward to being part of the next chapter and looking at how we can continue to grow and develop the charity to support even more families.”

Chair of the Trustee Board Graeme Stretton added: “The Board are very excited about David’s appointment. He brings a wealth of experience to the role and we look forward to seeing his ideas and working with him to build on Challengers achievements.”

David takes up his role immediately and will work alongside Laura until her departure at the end of December.

Welcome to Team Orange David!
