What's going on
We can all do something as inspirational as Bill…
Many people that live in Guildford will have heard of Bill Bellerby, and if you have not, keep reading as you will wish that you had known him. Bill, sometimes known as “Mr. Guildford”, dedicated his life to the town – promoting the arts, supporting charities and making sure it was a wonderful place to live, not only for us but for future generations.
Bill was a Teacher by profession but also took a turn as the Mayor of Guildford. He worked to support disadvantaged families and was a devoted public servant – serving as a county councilor for many years, impacting lives throughout the community.
“Bill, with Doreen (Bill’s wife), was a very good friend to so very many people, including Marie and me. He was one of the wisest people I have known; kind, caring, far-sighted and selfless. His interest in and care for so many people and organisations in Guildford and beyond was immense. One of the very best.
“When I think of Guildford I am always reminded with affection of Bill. A truly remarkable man.”
– David Watts, Retired CEO, Guildford Borough Council
Bill was a Patron of many local charities, Challengers being one of them, and when Bill sadly passed away we were one of the two charities that he left a legacy to.
Bill wanted the legacy he left Challengers to sustain our future, as although he didn’t have a disabled child he knew what Challengers means to local families and the vital part we play in their lives.
“We have just started using Challengers, but appreciate how invaluable it is both to my child and the rest of the family. You don’t realise how much you need help until you accept it and then appreciate how much you have struggled up to that point – that’s how I feel.”
– Challengers parent
Challengers changes lives in the community you live in, and for so many children, young people and their families is the difference between them coping and not.
Bill was an inspiration and so are you.
After providing for your loved ones in your will, by choosing to leave a gift of any size to Challengers will help ensure that we are able to continue benefiting future generations. Can you make one of your legacies to continue changing the lives of families in the community you live in?
“In every generation there are few who make a huge difference to so many. Bill Bellerby will be remembered as one such person. His impact on my life and my work was immense.”
– Tony Gorham MBE
