Badminton-a-thon with Olympic Medallist raises £1850 for Challengers

The University of Surrey’s Badminton Society organised a 12-hour badminton-a-thon featuring, Toby Penty, the European Mixed Team Championship Bronze Medallist, in October at the Surrey Sports Park in Guildford and raised a fantastic £1850 for local charity Challengers.

Smashing fun, games and competitive play took place over 12 hour period of non-stop badminton. There was group coaching, food and raffle stalls, radio DJ’s and a guest appearance from Olympic Bronze Medallist Toby Penty who ran a 50p challenge rally fundraiser with the winner being the first to 3 points.

The £1,850 will be going directly to local charity Challengers who provide play and leisure schemes for disabled children and young people. Currently supporting over 1,300 families in Surrey, Hampshire and Berkshire, this money will be going to the Challengers schemes in Guildford to pay for Christmas activities, parties and lots of festive fun.

Rhiannon Hopkin, Challengers Community Fundraising Officer, said: “We had such a fantastic day with loads of sporting fun and competitive spirit creating a fantastic atmosphere at this Badminton-a-thon. We are so grateful to the Badminton Society from Surrey University and everyone who joined in to make the day such a success.”

This event was generously sponsored by ALCOA and organised by the Badminton society from the University of Surrey, which Challengers are incredibly thankful for.
