A Giving Tuesday “Thank You”

You might be familiar with the term Giving Tuesday or have seen the hashtag #GivingTuesday trending on social media, but might not know what it refers to. Giving Tuesday is an international day of charitable giving which originated in the US a few years ago in response to the huge surge in consumerism on ‘Black Friday’ and ‘Cyber Monday’ after Thanksgiving.

So, if it’s usually held in November, why are we talking about Giving Tuesday in May?

This year things are a little different. Charities across the world have experienced huge losses in income, fundraising and services due to the coronavirus pandemic, so the team behind Giving Tuesday decided to host an additional Giving Tuesday on Tuesday 5th May – Giving Tuesday Now.

It’s a day to come together to recognise, celebrate and give thanks for the kindness and compassion that we’ve seen throughout the current crisis. It’s about showing gratitude and appreciation to everyone in your community, as well as celebrating and supporting the charities, like Challengers, who are trying hard to continue their important work in these challenging circumstances.

On behalf of everyone at Challengers, I’d like to say a big orange THANK YOU to the key workers – the doctors, nurses and other NHS staff; teachers; care workers; post men and women; bin collectors; delivery drivers; and everyone else who is going to great lengths to keep us safe and keep the country going during this difficult time. I’m proud to say that we have a lovely display of rainbows on the front door of our Guildford centre to show our appreciation for you all.

I’d also like to thank to our Challengers Pre-school staff – our very own key workers – who are providing a much-needed service for key worker families, as well as the small team of staff who are continuing to work to support the charity’s fundraising efforts and keep in touch with Challengers families.

Last but not least, I’d like to thank all of our supporters and followers. Your support over the last few weeks has been incredible and for that we are extremely grateful. It’s been wonderful seeing your heartfelt messages of support, your generous donations to our emergency appeal, and your creative fundraising ideas. Your support really does mean the world, not only to Challengers staff, but to every young person and family who attends.

So, this Giving Tuesday we say thank you to our community and encourage you to do the same.
