Challengers Chat - February 2017

Welcome to the third instalment of the Challengers Chat. This month, our Corporate Fundraising Manager, Susie Jewell, explains how the Business Club supports Challengers and shares her favourite Business Club memories.

My role at Challengers involves working with companies who support the charity through employee fundraising, volunteering and pro bono support. Part of this involves looking after the Business Club, which is a dynamic group of 37 local companies who are committed to supporting Challengers whilst growing their business and enjoying some fantastic benefits as part of their Business Club membership.

The Business Club meets quarterly for networking events and seminars from business leaders and celebrity guest speakers with each event offering an insight into key business areas or the celebrity speaker’s work. We have been lucky enough to have been joined by some fantastic speakers at past events such as Larry Sullivan, Co-Founder and Chairman of the COINS Foundation Anne Milton MP, and most recently actress Sally Phillips. Our events are relaxed and welcoming but there is always a buzz in the air and 70% of members have met new contacts through a Business Club event.

One of my favourite memories of our Business Club events was a Q&A with sports commentator and presenter John Inverdale. John gave a fascinating insight into his career and told stories of various people he’s met along the way, as well as some of the incredible jobs he’s worked on. Another highlight was a talk by the Founder of ESPA, Susan Harmsworth, who told us how she built her spa and skincare brand into a global business – she is such an interesting and inspiring lady!

Membership to our Business Club is £1,000 per year (or £85 per month) and this provides 50 hours of play for a disabled child or young person at one of our schemes. As well as making a huge difference to Challengers, the Business Club also provides companies with a way of fulfilling CSR objectives safe in the knowledge that their support is making a real difference locally. We also help to increase members brand awareness through regular positive PR, inclusion in our website and access to our communications.

We have an exciting project planned for the Business Club for 2017 which has been developed after members said they wanted to combine their collective strength to support Challengers. Members are working together to raise £10,000 on top of their membership fee to fund activity costs at Guildford and Farnham Play. This may sound a lot but it works out as each member raising just over £270 over the year (or £22.50 a month)! Members have already got fully behind the project with a range of fantastic events already being held – we’re looking forward to seeing how it develops throughout the year!

If you want to find out more about the Business Club, you can visit its own dedicated section on our website. You can also get in touch with me by emailing susiejewell@disability-challengers.org or by calling 01483 230 060 – I’d be happy to talk to you!
